Investors Bear Their Own Losses from Virtual Currency Platform Investments as Guangxi Court Dismisses Claims Against Referrers

Odaily reports: According to a case published by the Fusui County People's Court in Guangxi, in 2020, a couple surnamed Mo, both over seventy years old, were introduced by an acquaintance to participate in an overseas virtual currency mining machine wealth management project. They initially invested 4,200 yuan and recovered their principal, then subsequently invested over 60,000 yuan. In December 2020, the platform shut down and the couple was unable to withdraw funds. In early 2026, the couple sued the investment referrer and the actual operator, demanding the return of all investment funds plus interest. The court held that the virtual currency investment in question violated financial regulatory provisions and contravened public order and good morals, rendering the entrusted wealth management contract invalid; the losses stemmed primarily from the illegal nature of virtual currency transactions and platform risks rather than the personal conduct of the trustee, and therefore dismissed the plaintiffs' claims. The second-instance trial upheld the original judgment, which has now taken effect.
