Losses up approximately 745% month-over-month; 56 major attacks hit the crypto industry in October
According to PeckShield data, the crypto industry experienced 56 major security incidents in October 2026, with cumulative losses of approximately $6.48 billion, up roughly 745% from approximately $766 million in September. Among these, the Binance security incident caused approximately $6.3 billion in losses, with a further approximately $3 billion in assets frozen. It is the largest crypto industry security incident by loss amount so far this year, exceeding Bitget's approximately $387 million and Liquid Network's approximately $320 million, which rank second and third respectively. Approximately $285 million has been recovered in the Liquid Network incident. As of October 31, the top ten attacks by loss amount this year had caused a combined approximately $8.6 billion in losses, accounting for 92.3% of the year's total losses; this statistic has not yet deducted frozen and recovered funds. In addition to the above incidents, Drift, KelpDAO/LayerZero, and COLDCARD Wallet also ranked among the top ten by annual losses.
In the final weeks before the US midterm elections on November 3, crypto industry-related political action committees (PACs) further increased their political spending, with an overall tilt toward supporting Republican candidates. The three major crypto industry PACs have collectively spent nearly $170 million, of which Fairshake and its affiliated organizations spent $154 million and retained $56 million for the next election cycle. In addition, the Digital Freedom Fund, primarily backed by the Winklevoss brothers, spent over $8 million this month, focusing on preventing Democratic candidates from winning Senate seats in Ohio, Texas, and Iowa. The Fellowship Fund, which has close ties to Tether, previously contributed $3.8 million to Republican candidates and subsequently $600,000 to Democratic candidates, including $300,000 in support of New York Representative Ritchie Torres. Although the relevant PACs all lean toward supporting Republicans, the industry still frames its political spending as bipartisan and aimed at supporting crypto-friendly candidates. Fairshake's major financial backers include Coinbase, a16z, and Ripple Labs. The crypto industry's nearly $170 million in political spending makes it one of the most active industries in terms of political funding in this US congressional election cycle. (CoinDesk)
