Greece passes cryptocurrency tax framework: 10% capital gains tax, 15% tax rate on staking and DeFi income

Odaily Planet Daily News: The Greek parliament has passed a cryptocurrency tax framework. Starting January 1, 2027, annual net cryptocurrency gains exceeding €500 will be taxed at 10%; income from staking, crypto lending, and DeFi will be subject to a 15% income tax rate. Cryptocurrency losses exceeding €500 can be carried forward to offset future gains for five years.

The new rules clarify the tax treatment of cryptocurrency inheritance, gifts, and transfers between parents, with valuation based on prices from recognized trading platforms. Contributing cryptocurrency to a company's capital is considered a taxable transfer, while cryptocurrency sales are exempt from Greece's digital transaction tax; if the relevant income is paid in cryptocurrency, the taxable value is determined by the asset's euro price at the time of the transaction.

Investors may voluntarily declare unreported cryptocurrency gains and qualifying income within 12 months before or after the new rules take effect, and paying taxes within 60 days after declaration exempts them from late fees and interest. Whether cryptocurrency swaps trigger capital gains tax remains to be clarified, and the Greek Ministry of Finance will issue implementing rules. (Bitcoin.com News)
