Goldman Sachs Bans Most Employees from Using Advanced AI Coding Tools

Odaily News: After evaluating productivity and risk management issues, Goldman Sachs Group has banned most employees from using advanced AI coding tools, a move that has sparked discontent among some staff. Over the past few months, Goldman Sachs had been allowing bank employees to use Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub in their work.

However, according to internal guidelines updated in October, the bank has now restricted access to these tools to engineers only.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the ban has frustrated some traders. Previously, they had been using these tools to speed up client trading flow monitoring, market movement and position modeling, as well as text and graphic content production. This is not the first time Goldman Sachs has tightened employee access to specific AI tools. Earlier this year, the bank restricted Hong Kong-based employees from using Anthropic's Claude. Another source said the latest directive does not apply to employees known as "Strats," who primarily work at the intersection of trading, quantitative research, and software engineering.
