Adobe delivered a quarterly earnings report with strong fundamentals.

In FY2026 Q3, Adobe's revenue reached $6.76 billion, up 13% year-over-year, beating the market expectation of $6.69 billion; adjusted EPS came in at $6.13, also exceeding the market expectation of $6.08. Customer group subscription revenue reached $6.56 billion, accounting for approximately 97% of the company's total revenue, indicating that Adobe's core subscription model remains highly resilient.

However, following the earnings release, Adobe's stock price fell by about 2.5% in after-hours trading. What the market is concerned about is not the quarter just ended, but the slightly conservative revenue guidance for the next quarter: Adobe expects Q4 revenue of $6.8 billion to $6.85 billion, with a midpoint of $6.825 billion, slightly below the market expectation of $6.85 billion; the adjusted EPS guidance midpoint of $6.33 is essentially in line with expectations.

Compared to this minor guidance discrepancy, what is more noteworthy this quarter is that Adobe's AI strategy is transitioning from product deployment into the user conversion phase. Adobe announced that AI-first ARR grew over 150% year-over-year, and total monthly active users across its creative and productivity products surpassed 1 billion. The question is no longer whether users are willing to use Adobe's AI features, but how much of this usage can ultimately translate into new subscriptions, generative credit consumption, and enterprise contracts.

To understand Adobe's earnings report, one should not only look at whether revenue and EPS beat expectations, but also at whether AI is expanding Adobe's market or eroding the barriers to entry for traditional creative software.

Based on current data, Adobe's core business shows no clear signs of AI substitution. Customer group subscription revenue grew 14% year-over-year, Business Professionals and Consumers grew 16%, and Creative and Marketing Professionals grew 13%. Actual revenue across all three segments also exceeded the company's prior guidance midpoints. This means that amid the rapid proliferation of generative AI, Adobe can still grow subscription revenue rather than relying solely on price cuts and promotions to retain users.

Adobe's greatest advantage is its complete professional workflow. Standalone AI models can generate images, videos, or text, but enterprise clients also need editing, copyright management, brand consistency, cross-team collaboration, and large-scale content distribution. Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Acrobat, Firefly, and GenStudio together form a work chain from generation and editing to publishing—a product portfolio that is harder to replace than a single generative model.

At the same time, Adobe is expanding free user entry points. Free monthly active users of creative products have surpassed 100 million, and Acrobat and Express monthly active users exceed 900 million. The free strategy can lower the barrier for users to enter the Adobe ecosystem, helping the company compete against a flood of low-cost or free AI creation tools.

But monthly active users alone do not equal revenue.

Adobe needs to prove that new users will gradually form usage habits, consume more generative credits, and ultimately upgrade to paid subscriptions. AI-first ARR growing over 150% year-over-year is a positive signal, but the company did not disclose the absolute dollar amount of this ARR in this quarter's earnings report. Disclosing only the growth rate without the scale makes it difficult for the market to accurately assess the actual contribution of AI revenue to the total ARR of $27.5 billion.

This is also why the Q4 revenue guidance slightly below expectations triggered a stock price decline. Investors have already seen rapid user growth; what they want to see next is revenue accelerating in tandem. If AI monthly active users and usage continue to grow substantially while Adobe's overall revenue remains at low double-digit growth, the market may question the efficiency of converting free traffic into paid subscriptions.

The 16% growth in Business Professionals and Consumers, currently faster than the 13% growth in Creative and Marketing Professionals, is also worth noting. Acrobat, Express, and AI Assistant are expanding Adobe's service scope from professional designers to students, small and medium-sized businesses, knowledge workers, and ordinary consumers. Compared to the relatively mature Creative Cloud, this market segment has a larger user base and broader use cases, with the potential to become the next source of incremental growth.

However, expansion into the mass market could also lower per-user revenue. Free users, mobile users, and light-tool users typically have lower willingness to pay than professional designers, so Adobe needs to balance user scale, conversion rates, and average revenue per user. In the future, it will not be enough to observe MAU alone; one must also track paid user numbers, generative credit consumption, Firefly ARR, renewal rates, and average revenue per user.

Management succession is another variable. Anil Chakravarthy will take over as CEO on December 1, 2026, with Shantanu Narayen transitioning to Executive Chairman. Chakravarthy previously oversaw the customer experience orchestration business and global sales, with extensive experience in enterprise clients, AI marketing, and commercialization. This appointment suggests that Adobe's next phase may focus not just on launching more AI features, but on converting those features into measurable subscription and enterprise revenue.

From a financial perspective, Adobe still has ample room for transformation. Q3 operating cash flow reached $2.52 billion, adjusted operating profit was approximately $2.97 billion, and the company also repurchased about 9.5 million shares. Unlike AI infrastructure companies that need to invest massive capital in building data centers, Adobe mainly bears model R&D, inference, and product development costs, and does not need to expand its balance sheet on a large scale in exchange for revenue growth.

Going forward, what is worth watching is whether Firefly ARR can continue to grow rapidly, the conversion rate of free users to paid subscriptions, generative credit consumption, enterprise client adoption of GenStudio and AI agents, and whether the Creative & Marketing Professionals business can reaccelerate.

User scale has emerged, and product entry points have been established. What Adobe needs to prove to the market in the next phase is that these 1 billion monthly active users will not only use AI, but are also willing to keep paying for it.
