Odaily Odaily reports that crypto exchange Coinbase disclosed that a routine infrastructure update last week, due to an undetected Kubernetes resource name conflict, mistakenly modified the Istio ingress gateway component, resulting in approximately 50 minutes of service interruption. Coinbase stated that customer funds were not at risk.
The outage occurred between approximately 12:37 PM and 1:25 PM Eastern Time, impacting retail, institutional, and developer platforms. Some users were unable to complete deposits, withdrawals, or off-platform transactions, Coinbase Card debit card purchases were declined, while credit card purchases were unaffected.
The outage also affected on-chain swaps on Base and Solana via Coinbase DEX, with Coinbase Exchange and Prime customers experiencing delayed or failed transfers and settlements. Coinbase stated it will add naming conflict checks, separate recovery tools from managed infrastructure, and test emergency access procedures more frequently.
