Moonbirds IP holder and blockchain game development studio Orange Cap Games CEO Spencer discovered that Beeple had not purchased the domain name. To prevent potential phishing and fraud, Spencer purchased the domain name and directed it to Moonbirds' OpenSea page.

The incident stemmed from an AI-generated video Beeple played at his party on August 9th. In the video, the CryptoPunks founder stated that Nakamigos was a secret project of Larva Labs that predated CryptoPunks. The floor price of Nakamigos subsequently soared from 0.2 ETH to 0.4 ETH before falling back. Rumors circulated that Beeple himself purchased 100 Nakamigos before the party and subsequently sold them.
